Microwave repair cost comes down to two numbers: the $95 diagnostic and the repair price the technician gives you after testing the microwave.
The $95 diagnostic
The diagnostic on a microwave is $95, and it comes off the repair: agree to the job and the $95 is deducted from the price for parts and labor. You pay it separately only if you hear the price and decide not to repair — and if you change your mind later and call back, it still comes off the repair.
The repair price
The repair price itself depends on what is actually broken, and that is known after the diagnostic: one symptom can have several different causes, each with its own part and its own price. A microwave that stopped heating can need a door switch, a high-voltage diode or a magnetron — three different repairs. The technician tests the microwave first, then gives you one price for the whole job, parts and labor, and you decide with that number in front of you.

Microwave not heating
A microwave that runs but leaves food cold can have a failed magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor, or a fuse in the heating circuit. The technician tests the high-voltage components and door switches before naming which part actually failed.
Microwave runs but does not heat
When the light, fan and timer work but there is no heat, the door switches may not be closing the heating circuit or the diode or magnetron may have failed. The technician checks the interlocks first, then tests the high-voltage circuit in sequence.
Microwave sparking inside
Sparking can start at a damaged waveguide cover, burned food residue or a failing high-voltage part. Stop the microwave and leave it off; the technician inspects the cavity and waveguide, then tests the diode, capacitor and magnetron before the unit is used again.
Microwave tripping the breaker
A breaker that trips as soon as the microwave starts can point to a shorted capacitor, diode, magnetron or damaged wiring. The technician checks the outlet and breaker first, then isolates the microwave circuit to find the component drawing too much current.
Microwave buttons not working
Unresponsive buttons or a frozen display can come from the touch panel, its ribbon cable or the control board. The technician checks keypad response and power to the board before deciding which control part needs replacement.
Microwave turntable not turning
If the microwave heats but the tray stands still, the coupler, roller guide or tray drive motor may be worn or jammed. The technician checks the tray path and tests the drive before replacing the failed part.
